Guide CMS

A recent post on Content Management Connection’s blog made a lot of sense. In it, the online community for technology practitioners, software companies and end users, discussed the need to be content first, design second.

Their point is that you wouldn’t buy a suit for a stranger without first having her trying it on, so why design websites around content that doesn’t exist yet. It’s an interesting concept, but not as simple as it sounds.

While it’s true that when projects are started and designers are tasked with putting together comps of possible designs, the actual content for a site is usually just a gleam in the project manager’s eye. Rarely do design projects start with the final copy. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The announcement that Kapow Technologies (news, site) has just put the latest version of its Web Data Server — better known as its  Mashup Server — on general release should be of interest to anyone who is looking at their Web 2.0 apps for cost savings.

While a lot of companies claim a lot of things about their products, Kapow Technologies’ financial success and growth over the past two years has backed up those claims principally as a result of some very serious software.

With the v7.0 release Mashup Server boasts enhanced scalability and performance — and there are few other interesting bonuses as well.

Call it rubber-necking or whatever you want, but when one company buys another company in this business we want to know the details.

Such is the case with the announcement that Pennsylvania based Really Strategies (news, site) has just bought out DocZone (news, site), a Dutch-based SaaS XML content management provider under — you guessed it — undisclosed terms.

A couple days ago, Acquia moved Acquia Search out of beta and made it available commercially available through their Acquia Network service. Acquia Search is a hosted search service based on the Software as a Service (SaaS) model. The technology supporting Acquia Search is based on the the Open Source Lucene and Solr distributions from the Apache project.  While a free search module is already available in Drupal, as well as Acquia Drupal, Acquia Search is significantly different and geared toward the enterprise. Smaller but high traffic websites would also benefit from Acquia Search.

CMS Report has been beta testing Acquia Search for the past four months and we've had nothing but a positive experience with the service. In fact I feel as a beta tester I somehow didn't do my job since I didn't have any issues to report to Acquia. However, Acquia did acquire various usage statistics, email exchanges, and surveys from us that they still benefited from CMSReport.com's participation in the beta program. Since I know only enough about Drupal to be dangerous, if I can't break it then Acquia must be on the right track with this product.

As of July 1, 2009, PostNuke, legacy predecessor to Zikula, is officially discontinued (End Of Life). There will be no further development, security-related or otherwise, of the product. All users are asked to migrate to Zikula, where further development continues.

This decision was made by the Zikula Steering Committee in the second quarter of 2008 and announced on June 6, 2008. As of this writing, the Zikula development team will begin implementing the tasks outlined therein. Specifically, the support forums for PostNuke will be archived for reference only and will be unavailable for posting (posting PostNuke-related questions in other forums will result in a polite request to upgrade ).

On February 2, 2009, the Zikula Development Team introduced a Migration Distribution which allows Site Admins to more easily migrate their PostNuke .764 installation to Zikula 1.1.1. (Note that the migration distribution will not be updated to current versions of Zikula.) This distribution will continue to remain available in the cozi download area. Additions and improvements to that distribution are added to the documentation in the Wiki (Migrating to Zikula from PostNuke .764) and support for such migrations will continue in the Support Forum. In addition, webmasters needing expert assistance in their migration may hire a professional. Please contact them through http://zikulapro.com/.

Every now and then people ask me why we're doing Qaiku instead of "just using Twitter". Here are some points why Qaiku just works better:

• Qaiku culture and features promote more meaningful and threaded discussion - in general, people comment much more than start conversations which is a good sign
• Qaiku has language tagging and filtering meaning that when I post in Finnish it will not bother my international friends
• Messages and comments are proper Markdown, reducing ugliness typical of tweets
• Features like feed import and image sharing are built-in, removing need for external tools
• Channels, and especially private channels enable us to do workstreaming in Qaiku

White papers are not something we typically critique or comment on, but Clickability's new white paper, billed on their website as "What Vignette is Not Telling You," does, in fact, require special comment.

The paper's stated goal "is to provide strategic data and insights that will help in your decision-making process regarding Web Content Management." But the four-page phillipic quickly reveals itself as little more than an arrogant, shrill, and sometimes factually incorrect attack on Vignette and its new parent company, Open Text.

Many of the criticisms made in the white paper (involving upgrade pain, migration pain, slow product innovation, high licensing costs) will be familiar to any student of Vignette-bashing. There's truth in some of the claims, certainly, but it's a dated kind of truth, applying mostly to the Vignette of 2002 or 2004.

The truth is that Vignette has made a good-faith effort, over the past two years, to address many of the well-known criticisms about its products. Along the way, they've managed to produce a significant number of new products and rolled out non-trivial updates to existing ones. They've also become more competitive on pricing, and have clearly gotten the message on upgrade pain. So to drag out the standard laundry list of complaints about the Vignette of Olde and paint the company (yet again) as an innovation-averse, customer-ignoring purveyor of overpriced, outmoded goods is like beating a horse that died two years ago.

Of course, the positive changes that have happened to Vignette and its product line in 2008-2009 are of little comfort to you if you're still running the old V5 or V6. There will be pain involved in moving to a new or different platform. And that's clearly a selling opportunity for vendors like FatWire and Clickability. But those V5/V6 customers are already well aware of their dilemma -- and what does it say about the vendor that pursues that narrow group by painting an entire competing vendor as incompetent? 

There are other problems with the white paper. Clickability associates a quote involving "lipstick on a pig" with CMSWire in one part of the paper and then (inaccurately) with CMS Watch in another. In truth, the lipstick statement actually comes from an anonymous comment at the end of an article that appeared on CMSWire.

The name "CMS Watch" occurs four times in the white paper. Lest there be any misunderstanding, CMS Watch was not consulted prior to the paper's release. Our approval was neither sought nor given.

That goes also for the use of my name in the white paper. I did say, in a blog post about Open Text's acquisition of Vignette, that "Open Text's mishmash of .NET, C++, and Java technologies is not particularly well aligned with Vignette's J2EE-based systems" and that "Vignette only adds another layer to -- it in no way reconciles -- Open Text's crazy quilt of technologies." The Clickability paper repurposes these quotes out of context, hoping to turn technical analysis into scathing indictment. That wasn't my intent. 

Even if a person at an ad agency (rather than inside Clickability) wrote this so-called white paper, someone at Clickability should know enough about Marketing 101 to understand that you can't mud-sling your way to success. Good marketing isn't about making the competition look bad. It's about raising yourself up. In this case, if Clickability somehow finds itself raised up by this, it will be because it has been hoisted by its own petard.

In recent months I've encountered several customers of web analytics mega-vendor Omniture who had a very specific gripe about the platform: it was too hard to integrate Omniture reports and analytics into other applications, specifically their Web CMS dashboards. (Note: I'm not talking here about integrating vendor's JavaScript tracking code into your CMS -- that's usually trivial -- but rather, exposing reports in a CMS dashboard.)

At least three Web CMS vendors have also privately complained to us about Omniture in this regard. I think it's revealing that CMS vendors announce plans to implement Omniture reports in-line, but they never seem to come off.

To be fair, report integration can get difficult other analytics vendor offerings as well. My colleague Phil Kemelor points out that WebTrends and other commercial web analytics vendors can also be rigid in this regard. He's right, although I've seen WebTrends report or data integrations across various CMS packages, but have never seen anything similar with Omniture reports.

As our Web Analytics research subscribers know, Omniture has a reputation for being particularly closed when it comes to exporting data or reports. It wants to become your web data warehouse and central analytics hub. Case in point: you have to go to great lengths even to remove Omniture's logo from their reports when e-mailing them around internally.

I believe this mountain-comes-to-mohammed approach represents a hidden drag on Omniture licensees.

Why does this matter? I think content managers want to access analytics in a place where they can take action. Omniture would have you log into their dashboard, but many casual web managers find that too complicated, too remote, and not actionable. Web managers then tend to turn to (the probably over-worked) in-house Omniture guru. That seems wasteful. In these economic times, analytics are too important to be left only to analysts.

(One increasingly evident alternative -- resorting to the lightweight traffic metrics possibly built into your CMS -- doesn't solve the problem either. These CMS-driven systems typically deliver sub-standard metrics that even their vendors won't fully stand behind.)

Integration aside, the larger point is that web managers need to get savvier about analytics, rather than depending on others. Questions abound. What are the key technical issues? What data can you trust more than others? How do you effectively measure campaigns? And so on. (Disclosure: we answer many of these questions in our Web Analytics Fundamentals certificate course.) However you get there, if you're a web manager or web content specialist, learn more about analytics. Then push your vendor to deliver the right reports to the publishing tools you already use every day -- so you can act on them.

eZ Systems releases the first version of its new eZ Publish installer.

With all the talk of new solutions, new technologies and new versions of technologies, it would be hard to imagine that a considerable number of companies are still having problems with the basics of digital asset management (DAM).

That would appear to be one of the primary conclusions of a new report released by the Aberdeen Group (news, site) for Widen, a provider of web-based digital asset management applications. The report says that only half of Best-in-Class organizations (53%) indicated they currently have searchable access to content.

In August of last year, the CNW Group, a provider of news and information distribution services for communication professionals, launched their social media release, the evolution of their multi-media release which includes print, audio, video and Internet and a little more.

Now they go another step in supporting the needs of communication professionals with the release of the CNW MediaRoom, an externally hosted website that integrates into a company’s website, providing the ability to quickly and easily provide communications like press and social media releases.

Open source enterprise content management vendor Alfresco (news, site) really doesn’t strike you as a vendor that likes to stay in the shadows. Quite the contrary actually. And the work they have been doing on CMIS — the Content Management Interoperability Specification — proves it. Their goal — and they aren’t being subtle about it — is to the first Enterprise CMS that is fully CMIS compliant.

C'est pas trop de moi de me faire des r&eacute;capitulatifs mensuels, mais finalement je tiens &agrave; mettre un peu l'accent sur le mois pass&eacute; car pas mal de changements ont eu lieu.<br> Parmi les plus visibles, vous aurez tr&egrave;s certainement constat&eacute; que j'ai fait un peu de m&eacute;nage sur la page d'accueil et sur pas mal de zones du site, le but est clairement de gagner en lisibilit&eacute; et en facilit&eacute; de navigation.<br> Le pied de page a &eacute;t&eacute; revu, permettant ainsi de retrouver une navigation riche en pied de page, ainsi que le menu du haut &agrave; droite du site, la navigation ne devrait qu'&ecirc;tre plus facile ( <i>surtout le rep&eacute;rage </i>).<br> L'aspect des articles a &eacute;t&eacute; aussi revu &agrave; le mode blog (<i> c'est plus ... tendance</i> ), j'ai commenc&eacute; aussi &agrave; apporter des compl&eacute;ments d'informations concernant le cms, tels que les pr&eacute;-requis, les caract&eacute;ristiques g&eacute;n&eacute;rales, des g&eacute;n&eacute;ralit&eacute;s, un recencement de la documentation existante etc etc, ceci est visible sur cette <a href="http://index.php?op=about">fameuse page 'about'</a><br> <br> L'accent a &eacute;t&eacute; port&eacute; ce mois ci sur le portage de templates, ce qui &eacute;t&eacute; attendu depuis bien longtemps, et &agrave; la vue du nombre de t&eacute;l&eacute;chargement je ne peut qu'&ecirc;tre satisfait du r&eacute;sultat, ce qui m'encourage &agrave; continuer en ce sens, vous l'aurez constat&eacute; un forum d&eacute;di&eacute; &agrave; la d&eacute;monstration des templates a vu le jour, ainsi que des vignettes qui sont maintenant accessibles d&egrave;s la page d'accueil permettant &agrave; tout un chacun, de d&eacute;couvrir au fil du temps le dernier th&egrave;me, et un autre pris au hasard du <a href="http://www.php-maximus.org/modules.php?name=Theme_System">portefeuille existant</a>.<br> Rien que durant le mois de juin <b>27 nouveaux templates</b> ont vu ainsi le jour, <u>du jamais vu</u> !<br> Je ne promet certes pas de tenir cette cadence, mais j'envisage clairement une concentration du travail sur ce point pr&eacute;cis, l&agrave; o&ugrave; Maximus avait un manque certain jusqu'alors, j'ai d'ailleurs pu constater que nombres de nouveaux utilisateurs se tournaient directement sur cette panoplie, et le hasard de google m'a fait tomber sur des sites d&eacute;j&agrave; radicalement diff&eacute;rents de ce que l'on connaissait jusqu'alors, donc il faut continuer en ce sens et j'esp&egrave;re pouvoir continuer &agrave; importer de nouveaux templates &eacute;largissant ainsi le choix pour tous nos utilisateurs.<br> <br> Ceci dit et pour clore toute pol&eacute;mique sur le '<span style="color: rgb(128, 128, 128);"><i>que devient maximus</i></span>', j'ai re&ccedil;u nombre de mails et de mp m'alarmant de certains faits qui s'av&egrave;rent r&eacute;els ( <i><span style="color: rgb(128, 128, 128);">en plus</span></i> ) !<br> <br> Alors &agrave; la question maximus, continue t il ? Je ne me pose m&ecirc;me pas la question ! <b>Bien &eacute;videmment OUI</b><br> &agrave; la question qu'est ce qui s'est pass&eacute; ces six derniers mois ? Je travaille, j'ai une vie, je suis comme tout le monde et je ne peux pas tous les jours apporter des nouveaut&eacute;s !<br> &agrave; la question y aura t il une nouvelle version de maximus ? OUI, maximus 2009 est en cours de finalisation.<br> &agrave; la question, pour quand ? je ne sais pas, comme &ccedil;a c'est plus simple mais j'y travaille depuis fin 2008.<br> &agrave; la question qu'est ce qu'il y aura dedans ? l&agrave; je sais mais je ne le dirai pas :) d'autant plus que je n'ai pas fix&eacute; encore avec certitude quels scripts je vais ajouter, et quels scripts je vais upgrader mais sachez que j'ai un grand choix sous le bras.<br> aura t on la possibilit&eacute; d'avoir un ou des autres forums ? OUI, l&agrave; y'a pas de secrets, <b>SMF</b> ( <i>Simple Machine Forums</i> ) est op&eacute;rationnel ainsi que <b>FluxBB</b> auquel je vais porter la plus grande attention, le premier sera disponible sous forme d'auto-identification et sera totalement autonome de maximus, le second lui sera totalement int&eacute;gr&eacute; en module.<br> &agrave; la question, aura t on un module type blog ? OUI, deux modules arrivent &agrave; terme, l'un 100% blog, le second plus orient&eacute; publication collaborative, le premier est un condens&eacute; de ce qu''il se pratique en r&egrave;gle g&eacute;n&eacute;rale sur le web avec une approche type dotclear/wordpress, le secon lui &agrave; une approche type mambo/joomla<br> <br> Voil&agrave; je pense avoir un peu fait le tour de la situation, et r&eacute;sum&eacute; au mieux le pass&eacute; et le futur :)<br> En souhaitant que maximus vous apporte autant de satisfaction qu'&agrave; moi m&ecirc;me :)<br> <br> <br> <br>

Firefox 3.5, the latest version of the best desktop browser was released yesterday. Upgrade now, and you'll get cool new features like browser geolocation and native HTML5 video support, not to mention much faster javascript.

With both Firefox 3.5 and iPhone OS 3.0 out, a significant number of browsers suddenly have geolocation support. It will be interesting to see how quickly web services start to follow up, providing more meaningful content through the location context.

There is even a patch to make Firefox use GeoClue for its location needs.

Just read an interesting post on Tom Miller's blog summarizing NYC Mayor Bloomberg's keynote note from the Personal Democracy Forum. Miller's take on the speech was that the city may use Google Analytics for optimizing web site content. From this passage about the Bloomberg presentation, I'd have to agree: 

 I have to say, the idea of government web sites using Google Analytics makes me a bit uneasy from a privacy perspective. I just can't get comfortable with the idea of the government passing data to GA so Google can come up with new ways to advertise and market.  

There's a lot of activity going on these days around the subject of web analytics and government as it relates to the Obama Administration Open Government initiative and the release of the Web Analytics Association Report on Government and Web Analytics.

We don't usually think of the public sector as a hotbed of web analytics activity, but change has been long overdue. It's great to see that change may be on the way. Hopefully it will be sorted out so that there is a reasonable balance between analytics value and personal privacy protection.
